My kids have a love hate relationship with escalators. They keep changing their minds on weather it completely freaks them out or if it’s an amusement park ride. I don’t blame them when they think it’s scary. It’s a huge set of metal stairs that move.It is a little daunting.
We constantly forget which child hates them and which child thinks they are the funnest thing ever invented. So while we were at the mall this weekend we all stepped on the escalator going up without thinking. A few seconds later I realized my 4 year old standing at the bottom terrified and bawling. I had forgotten to pick her up or hold her hand.
I did not want to leave my daughter alone and panicked So I went into brave mom mode. I started trying to go back down the escalator. Have you ever tried to do that? it’s really hard and I am sure looked very entertaining. I wasn’t getting anywhere! Instead of just going up the escalator and then going on the down one and quickly retrieving my daughter (which would have made a lot of sense ) I decided I needed to heroically jump down to the bottom. I was not that far up and was trying to get the nerve when I finally leaped into the air to the bottom to get my screaming 4 year old. It was really intimidating and scary! I successfully completed the task and made it to my daughter with a big hug and helped her up the escalator like I should have done in the first place.
My husband laughed hysterically when I later compared my heroic act to stories I have heard where mothers get so much adrenaline when tragedy strikes that they are able to lift a car off their child. Yeah I admit it was a little bit of a stretch. But hey, as moms we are willing to do anything for our children! Even look silly on an escalator for everyone to see.
