My Thoughts on Budgeting and Finance

I am in complete shock that it has been year since we bought our first home. I do not miss the stress that I felt during the time we were figuring out how we were going to be able to afford our mortgage I am not going to lie, a lot of chocolate was consumed during that time.

One thing that was tricky for us was the fact that we live on a teachers salary. We wondered how all of our bills were going to be paid with the significant increase our mortgage was going to be. One awesome thing we were able to do with a little bit of the funds our condo sold for was pay off our minivan. That helped us immensely and felt great. we are a one car family and it is awesome to not have a car payment at the moment.

Paying our mortgage has still been quite the adjustment. My husband and I do a few things that help us stay on track. At the start of each month we have a meeting with each other. What’s a productive meeting without a cheesy name? We call ourselves Team Kerby. (Our last name) There may even be a team cheer with the occasional pep rally. (ok I am kidding about the last part) We sit down at our computer and open our bill paying spread sheet and go through all of our bills. We make sure our four crazy daughters are well entranced watching TV or something so we won’t be interrupted. We then figure out how much money we have left after our bills are paid to budget groceries and things.

I used to pay all the bills myself but I find it goes much more smoothly when we do it as a team. GO TEAM KERBY!! (said while my husband and I create a two person pyramid and then do back handsprings)

We follow up mid month with a mini money meeting (say that three times fast) where we make sure we are staying on track and everything is going smoothly. Now we are definitely not financial pros at all and we aren’t always on top of our finances the best. but I do have to say that communicating with each other about our finances has helped us immensely!

Now can someone please help us factor in the financial craziness that I know will happen as my daughters get older? Times prom dresses by four and you try not to have a heart attack!
